kar yağıgor bu şimdi!!

It's snowing right now!! So I think I finally have some indoor downtime to update this thing (: Sorry for the long wait (Grams) but alas, here is a summary of our adventure in Bulgaria last weekend:

First of all, keep in mind that this trip was pretty spontaneous. We had the idea of going to Bulgaria in the back of our minds for a while, but we didn't know anything about the country, what cities to go to, what sites to see, or even what kind of language they speak there! Well Thursday rolled around and we finally bought our tickets that afternoon for 9:30 that night! They were one way tickets also because the Metro Bus Service couldn't book return tickets at their office. Thus we went home, packed up, caught dinner with Erin and her mama, and boarded a one-way bus to Plovdiv, Bulgaria! I guess I should also mention the ''we'' here is me, allie, mark & ian from australia, and pauline from france!

The bus ride was a bit of a nightmare... Mainly because it was over eight hours long but also mainly because it was uncomfortable and we had to go outside at 4am for passport border control issues. Cold, man! Eventually we arrived in Plovdiv at 7 in the morning. Everything was dead - both us and the city. After walking around for a while we realized places won't open until maybe 9 or 10. So we decided to just walk around. Allie and I have pretty much become excellent gezmekers so these two hours were a dream for us (: The first place we decide to stop at immediately demonstrated to us a difference between the Turkish and Bulgarian lifestyles.

Here in Turkey, the people are known for being incredibly hospitable and it is not uncommon for a Turk to go out of his or her way to help someone out. For example, tomorrow night I am going to a ''Warm Turkish Home'' for dinner. My friend Fatih is in the XChange Commission and he knows a family who wants to host a dinner for 5 international students. Cool, right? Julia went to another home last week and had an incredible experience! The people here are so nice! (: Another example of their hospitality came when Julia, Erin, & I spent a morning walking around Bebek (along the water) and decided to stop at a traditional place for brunch. The place was clearly full when we got inside but the hosts and guests had no problem rearranging just to make room for us! Who does that? Not the Bulgarians evidently... After walking around in the early morning cold for a while, we go into the only open café we can find. The tables are the size of picnic tables with benches instead of chairs. Each table has one person (maybe two) sitting and eating. It looks pretty empty to us. The hostess thought otherwise. She just kept looking at us, a little put out that we even bothered to show up. She kept motioning to the ''crowded'' room and was practically pushing us out the door. haha it was kind of funny, but at the time it was just odd and a little rude. I thought the point of running a café was to serve customers and make money but maybe I'm wrong (:

Thus our trek continued. We eventually found the main street and boy do I love the old Bulgarian architecture! It's hard to describe but quite picturesque, charming even. During our walk (seriously this is in the main, modern part of the city) we stumble upon what? None other than ancient Roman ruins! Big columns and amphitheater seating just hanging out next to the highway! haha it was pretty cool the way this kept happening, actually. (Yes ''actually'' - it's a fave word here along with ''by the way'' and ''for example'' so my apologies if these words keep popping up!) Finally we find a tea and coffee place and we whipped out our ekemek, peanut butter, and jam and go to town in this chic café (:

After breakfast we found an internet gaming station where we were able to pay for internet usage and check my Couch Surfing account. Did I mention we couch surfed? (www. couchsurfing.com) CouchSurfing is a network of hosts and travelers that connects people internationally so that when you travel somewhere (like Plovdiv) you can stay for free at a person's home. Our host was Atanas. 38 year-old pilot with a wife and two darling kids. Because there were 5 of us coming, he said we'd need to go to his mountain home for couch surfing instead of his city apartment. At the internet place, we learned that Atanas was at work until 4:30 so we had all day to ourselves and we could catch a bus after that to his village. Plan.

We find the Tourism Center and the most helpful man gave us maps and postcards and directions to the old city and we were off! The old city of Plovdiv was very cool indeed. Again the architecture was so charming! And the history was absolutely incredible. At one point we met a man selling Russian dolls and toys who wanted to tell us all about the Ottoman history in Bulgaria, the Turkish-Bulgarian (lack of) relationship, etc etc. (It was pretty much a ridiculous russian doll situation, but he was funny). We also ate lunch at a nice traditional place. (Cheap too! Not that I had or wanted any at 2 in the afternoon, but the beer was nearly 50 cents!)

After our pleasant afternoon hiking past Roman ruins, entering ornate old churches, and antique shopping, we find our way back to the bus station. Oh and we got delish ice cream on the way (: We managed to have enough time to buy our return tickets home to Istanbul and our tickets to Korlovo (in the mountains). Unfortunately, we didn't have time to call our host, Atanas, but we'd figure if worse comes to worst we'll call him when we get there and get further instructions. haha there? where? We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.

The bust starts driving out into the middle of nowhere. I think all of us fell asleep and every time the bus stopped we'd note that we were at a shack and a bench. It all looked the same! Finally, after an hour, Allie suggested we try to borrow someone's cell phone. So I asked the girl next to me if she spoke English. Praise God she did and she gave us her cell phone which we handed to the bus driver. The bus stops. Atanas tells us to get off right away. We just missed the stop! haha how lucky is that? We missed it by one stop! After waiting on the side of the road for a little while, a car pulls up. The man doesn't speak any English but we're pretty sure he's our ride... who else is picking up 5 foreigners in the middle of nowhere Bulgaria right?

He brings us to a bar in this tiny village where eventually Atanas walks in. We luckily recognized him because he was still wearing his pilot onesie - oh and we met the mayor there too. Mon dieu, quel catastrophe! (As Ian would say... all day we tried practicing our French with Pauline) But we finally made it. Atanas took us up to his home and explained that the village has only 350 people. No gypsies (just one crazy lady) so we should be okay - how reassuring! By this time, it is nearly pitch black outside and freezing cold! The house we come to has no heat and the bathroom is a hole in the ground outside. There's a nice sized bahçe (garden), framing all around for grape vines, two floors, 8 beds, a 'shower', a guitar, and a drum. Atanas decides maybe tea (heated by a travel-sized camping gas can) and a jam session are a good idea. The water never boils so instead he calls the restaurant (if i can even call it a restaurant) and we decide to go get some dinner there. Bulgaria is known for its mineral water and its white cheese and let me tell you both were delicious at this point! Oh and the traditional folk music videos were a sight! We spend some time talking philosophy with Atanas before eventually calling it a night and heading to bed.

We all slept for over 12 hours. Holy cow. But the sun was shining in the morning and we could finally have a look at the village. Kind of what we thought we'd seen the night before: crumbling ''brick'', terra cotta rooftops, dirt piles, one church, and lots of kokoshka - chickens.

You're going to Ankara? Neden??

Last week (I'll spare the excruciating details) we finally became Turkish!! We had to go to the crazy polis station at six in the morning and literally fight the crowds to get in but after 7 hours our paper work was finally complete! Not to mention we made some more friends while we were there including Penina, Tyler, Mark, & Ian. On wednesday night we organized a potluck at Mark & Ian's and we've pretty much established that potlucks will be happening every wednesday night for the rest of the semester - tonight its at my place & I'm contributing skillet cookies (back by popular demand from last week). Should be heaps good! On thursday Julia and I went back to the Polis station to get our actual permits (işte bu!) And spent the rest of the day gezmeking and purchasing up the wazoo. Galatasaray sneaks? Check. $2 watch? Check. Earrings? Check. Kurdish blanket & three gorgeous pillows? Check check & check - so stoked about these guys! (:

Last weekend Katie Nolan organized a way for us to join her on a gezmek to Ankara (Turkey's capital for those who are unawares...coughcoughMOMcough (: and apparently a boring city too) Every time we told our classmates we were going to Ankara, their response every time was ''what?? why?? there is nothing to do there! are you really wanting to see Ataturk's grave?'' Anyway, we decided that if nothing else, we were getting out of the city and we'd be together & have fun anyway. Plus, it was going to be my first time couch surfing! (couchsurfing.com) so neden olmus? (why not?) Thus, the four of us caught a midnight bus to Ankara & we're all so thankful Erin was able to sleep on the 7 hour bus ride while the rest of us truly enjoyed the silent uncomfortable HOT (çoook sıcak!) bus (:

We arrived early in the morning on Saturday & eventually find a Simit Sarayı restaurant for breakfast (after turning down several offers of directions to McDonald's haha) We spent the rest of the morning gezmeking around with our huge backpacks. Eventually we found the Kocatepe Mosque - a huge (though recently built) Ankaran landmark. It was still too early in the morning for the Cami to be opened to visitors so we dined at a nearby kahvehane & caught a little tavula (backgammon) action. Finally we were able to go inside the mosque and my was it çok büyük (so big)! We spent a really long time wandering inside its massive ornate walls & taking pictures. Afterward we caught up with Katie's friend in a small restaurant. We read each other's Turkish coffee grounds (traditional fortune-telling technique) & for those who truly know me, I feel obligated to confess that the π symbol totally appeared in my cup! How does it know i love math so much?? hahahah (: Eventually the waiter gave us a free 80s Dance Hits Vol. 3 mix CD and we were off to buy some tatlı for our Couch Surfing host! We found a delish dates & nuts shop complete with stuffed life-size camel & spinning dervish as its decor. After many many samples & finally purchasing a box of chocolate covered dates, we were off to Adelaïde's (our host) house.

Our host was so nice! She is french & is currently teaching french to Turkish students in Ankara. She was incredible but probably a little bit weirded out by our Turkish language habits (i.e. imitating our professor who has an abnormally deep & drawn out voice). We visited with her for a while, dropped our bags, & were back on the streets within an hour or two. My roommate is from Ankara actually & she was able to tell us about a spinning restaurant at the top of a really tall tower where you can see the whole city! We found it and enjoyed a most delicious meal (even quail!) Çok Şık!! Not to mention, we were serenaded nearly 90% of the evening by the fabulous Céline Dion. After our meal, our waiter led us upstairs where a private party (400 peeps + live band) was going down. We're pretty sure that the party-goers truly appreciated the incredible dance stylings of four crazy (and sloppily underdressed - oh also i hadn't showered in 5 days) American girls! We had fun anyway...

We slept like babies & in the morning Adelaïde had prepared DELİCİOUS breakfast for us! Eggs, veggies, pancakes, fresh squeezed orange juice, tea, the works! It was hard to get going after that (: but eventually she took us on a dolmuş (ne taksi ne ötöbüs - neither a taxi nor a bus, kind of in between) and we got off at a great & maze-y bazaar. The bazaar led up to the Cıtadel - an old Ankaran castle dating back to the 7th century! We hiked up the castle grounds which were so pretty & once you get inside the Citadel walls, you're in an amazing village with stacked up houses and winding dirt alleys. Laundry hanging from windows, carpets being beaten outside, children playing all around. So awesome to just poke around this place! Eventually we make it up to the actual castle area - and what's going on inside the castle walls? A bunch of little boys playing soccer! Of course we joined & had SOOO much fun playing with them (for what, two hours maybe?) They were hilarious! Again we got to practice our Turkish and the kids were eager to practice their English (''what nationality are you?'' ''hello! how are you? i am fine also thank you!'' etc etc) Ahh man İ simply cannot describe that feeling! It was so so fun to play soccer finally and with these little hilarious guys in an old castle?? so cool! Luckily the weather was fabulous too!

We finally end the match, do a quick photoshoot with our teammates & climb up the top of the castle walls where you can see all of Ankara and beyond for miles! Another photoshoot - this time the obligatory jumping pictures (: and we eventually  make it back down to a small restaurant on the hill - with a gorgeous view - for kahve (coffee). After that we start looking for a place to eat dinner. Unfortunately the city pretty much shuts down on Sundays after 6pm so this made things difficult. We did wander through another market like bazaar and the guys kept handing us fish to hold & take pictures of (: haha gross! Finally we found an open restaurant and enjoyed kebaps & pilav (mmm) I don't really have time to go into the details but let's just say one of the workers may have had a small crush on me... He actually drove us home after dinner so at least we got back for free right? Don't worry, mom, I only use this tactic on the really attractive boys - just kidding (check the photos).

Ahhh we enjoyed the next couple hours chatting with Adelaïde & finally took the metro back to our bus stop & journeyed home to Istanbul. Unfortunately I got sick and I am still getting over it - hopefully soon! My friend (& Turkish tutor) Mali brought me oranges & orange juice & soup this morning when he found out I was missing class (: I think I'm starting to feel better but we'll see.

Last night Allie & I started planning our trip to Bulgaria (: We are going tomorrow night with Mark & İan (australian friends who are awesome & actually part of campus crusade on their campus & totally think i should do a summer project in australia - not a bad idea right?) and Katie & Pauline might also join us. We will be couch surfing again so İ'll let you know how it goes!

Look for pics on facebook - sorry i cant get this stupid blog to work right! Love you!!! xox

Snowboarding in Bursa!?? GERÇEKTEN???

Evet. Doğru. (yes. it's true.) But we'll get to that in a minute.

Here I am, Sunday morning...sore as ever from yesterday & enjoying my typical breakfast (: Please note the JIF from home, the boxed milk, danone yoğurt, ahududu reçeli (raspberry jam), & Nestle cheerios.

Weekly update: school's been going well. Still not much homework & we're enjoying our classes. & we're making lots of friends (: Tuesday evening was the first Turkish Conversation Club meeting & it was sooo fun! I really do feel like I'm getting a hang of the language & it's so exciting (: I'm working on vocab/verb memorization now! You should see my room, there are post-its everywhere haha. Mali was my tutor & he's pretty funny so we had a good time. Also everyone went out to dinner/dessert after & Erin & I played a wicked sweet game of Egyptian Rat Screw. & by wicked sweet, I mean I won... Mali taught us some Turkish smack talk but I forget it now... We wrapped up the evening with FOTC & dondurma (Flight Of The Conchords & ice cream). We discovered a new dinner option on Wednesday night - that is, cheesy rice, chicken, & veggies. & some more Turkish TV i think. Thursday after class Zeynep & I watched Turkish MTV - Made, & I learned the words for dude (abi) brother (erkek kardeş) & sister (kız kardeş). That night was full of excitement (: Arican's Radyoclub party at Les Ottomans!! Very swanky (çok şik!) & more fun music AAANNNDDD a really great way to practice my Turkish! Seriously (: Every time we go to a some sort of party I try all my Turkish out & I am always surprised at how much I actually know! Haha for example a couple guys were teaching us some sweet dance moves & instead of "butter the bread" i called it "balkaymak the lavaş" hahaha (: etc etc... Friday we made more friends in out Operations Research Problem Session & I might add, our TA is pretty cute. Allie doesn't agree but my roommate Zeynep pointed out that that's a good thing - no competition! haha (:

Now onto the REAL reason you're reading this post: BURSA!!! Please again note: HOW GORGEOUS!!

My roommate Irem is dating Batuhan who is also in our Operations Research class. In class on Thursday, he invited us to join him & the rest of the Bogazici ski team for a ski trip on saturday. Total cost, including rental: 110YTL. That is, $65! Are you insane?? Who passes up an offer like that? Plus, Batuhan & Irem are just so cute! (: He was so great in organizing our part of the trip: he got us spare snowpants, coats, gloves, & goggles from his teammates. He picked us up from the Superdorm at 4am on Saturday & took us to the buses at Akmerkez mall. The bus then drove over to the Asian side of Istanbul and eventually onto a Ferry! We got off the bus and walked around the boat for a while, watching the sunrise over the Marmara Sea. So beautiful (: Eventually we made it to the mountain & the bus drove us to the top, through a forest that reminded me of the movie Defiance - just more snow. But these huuuuge beautiful trees! Ah such a great way to wake up after a four hour bus ride (: Unfortunately, I don't think the guys did very well in their competition that day, but the girls' team made 2nd place & are now going to europe to compete! I think it was all thanks to Allie's strong performance in the last heat.* Way to go team!! Speaking of team, Tim ("team" as the Turks say...and we say) was a wonderful instructor all day. I had the most terrible time getting up the T-bar lift thing. What the heck?? Who invented those? NO good. I have a nice nasty huge bruise on my left thigh now. Far too many wipe outs. But Tim was
patient and taught me everything I now know about toe-side, goofy-style. I eventually made it up to almost the top & hiked the rest of the way (haha). We took a break at the cafe up on the top of the mountain & made friends with one of its frequenters (& a photographer), Mazo. After we enjoyed heating up by the fire, eating some tavuk sis & corba, & listening to Tim jam on a saz guitar, he led us to the slope with a CHAIR lift & took some pictures of us mid slope! They look awesome (: Yeah, we're friends on skype now so he is currently, at this very moment, sending me our pics. haha he was nice. Oh, and told me I have a really nice head. We think he meant I'm smart, but it was pretty funny (:

The rest of the day was absolutely breathtaking! Here are some more photos to show what I mean:

[rats. the pics aren't working @ the moment.... stay tuned.]

*Allie did not actually compete. Though she probably should have. Bogazici Volleyball Team, Bogazici Ski Team, why not?

ilk haftasında kursları (first week of classes)

Sorry I'm not very good at this blogging business. For one, I'm just a terrible writer, as we know. And for two, I'm having such an incredible time here that sometimes I forget to let you all know about it! I'm busy busy busy (: Let's see... first of all, I guess I should mention my bags came!! Iştabu!! Friday night we went to a house party with Arican & Emre to celebrate Kaya's birthday. It was a fun party with Maddy (Kaya's cousin from England who also lives in the Superdorm!) & mainly Koc University students (even some more Americans!) etc. I also met Cem & Saim who are going to invite me to play soccer whenever they organize matches. (: (: Can't wait! We ate Chinese food (from a box!) and Allie enjoyed some lovely birdwatching - without forgetting to wear the appropriate equipment of course (: When we got back to the Superdorm, I knew my bags were coming because I had called the airline earlier that day. I was so excited!! I ran into the lobby & ran over to my bags ready to hug them when OH NO my feet slip out from under me and I crash backwards onto the floor & slide into my bags. hahahhaha! it was hilarious (: Hakan (our security guard friend) also thought it was hilarious and was laughing so hard. He pointed to the security camera & the security TVs and pretended to rewind & watch me fall over & over - pantomiming of course because he speaks no english & we speak no turkish - yet! But alas, my stuff was finally here!

The rest of the weekend was pretty relaxing. On Saturday we went to the neighborhood market for el cheapo produce!! We're talking 5 oranges for a lyra (60 cents) total. & a free tomato. That night we enjoyed a dinner with our other American girlfriends at "Populer Pizza" - tough to ask Hakan for directions to because he thought we wanted to know what were some popular pizza places. "Pizza Hut? Domino's" he'd say... Sunday was pretty gross but we tried walking around campus & finding out where our classrooms would be. & don't worry, we're finally decked out in our Boğaziçi gear! That night we (A, E, J, me) cooked pasta again & veggies @ Julia's. mmmmm! It was really really nice just sitting around chatting for a long time that night. I love these girls! Then Erin & I watched 13 Going on 30 (dubbed in Turkish!) with my roommates & I stayed up really late talking with them - that was lots of fun!

Monday began the first week of classes - Numerical Analysis @ 11am. My classmates only speak & ask questions in Turkish. That's fun! That night, Julia's friend Luke from London came to town & we ate at Ecvator in Taksim - delicious mexifood. Oh, also I met my husband - Peter, a carpenter from Sweden. You're all invited. Then I came back & skyped paps for a while (:

Tuesday was Operations Research @ 9-10 - incredibly boring. unbelievably boring. more boring than professor Katz @ washU! (is that possible?) Irem's boyfriend, Bathouan is in our class & he met up with us after & gave Allie & I lots of info on sailing club & aviation club (paragliding!) Then Facilities Design & Planning @ 12-2 - more interesting than OR. Then Turkish for Foreigners @ 3-5. Should be a fun class, but the four of us are already so far ahead! psshhh "Merhaba"?? that's for beginners! That night was Ufram Ocakbeşi again... mmm... and then Emily & I dominated Luke, Caitlin, & Katie at some tavla (backgammon). (:

Wednesday was Num.Anal. @11-1, Turkish @1-3. Our campus is so pretty! & after that we went into Taksim, picked up Luke, and walked to the Galata Tower... çok güzel!! (so pretty!!) just check out the pics (: Unbelievable. Then we found dinner at "The Liver Corner" of course, we don't speak Turkish so we didn't know that's what it was called. We drank oğranç (orahnch - disgusting) beet juice!! yuck! But ate delicious kebaps & free baklava dessert!! Then we went to a nargile (hookah) place and sat on big comfy cushions on the ground & Allie & I shared a rice pudding... Such a fun place (:

Thursday was Operations Research @9-11, Facilities @11-1. Then I was the only person done with class so I met up with Luke & we were going to go to the Grand Bazaar. Sadly, I was completely distracted by a lamp/chandelier store & really hit it off with the guys who worked there. I talked them down to a reasonable lamp price & they made me a whole chandelier!! They were hilarious & much better prices than inside the Bazaar. Unfortunately for Luke, the affair took two & a half hours because I was having so much fun while they made my chandelier hahaha. Oh well, it's so beautiful & I can't wait to show it off! That night was the Sportsclub Disco Spring Semester Kickoff party at Airport Dance Club & it was insane!!! Such fun dancing music & we stayed so late (: haha. One guy actually lived in fairfax county for 2 years & knew my high school! Strange?? Yeah!! He bought me a drink & I rudely declined on accident & felt really bad about it... so I tried my first cranberry vodka cocktail, actually pretty yummy. Luckily All the Single Ladies came on & I ditched him (kinda creepy) for the dance floor!

Friday was simply Facilites @12-1. Then Allie & I had a weird experience at the American Internship Center where they needed help for a weekend job fair. It was a sketchy ordeal & we ended up backing out... We spent the afternoon just gezmek-ing (wandering) and I bought a $2 tee from a fun store (: We also tried kumpire (basically a stuffed baked potato) and walked along the Bosphorus some more until we caught a bus back to Bebek & walked home. We had more pasta & salad with J, E, & Luke and that was nice (:

Yesterday was hilarious! Allie & I woke up late & went on a run together. (My first run this semester! It felt so good!) However, it started raining then icing then snowing on us & we came back after maybe 2 or 3 miles... There's a track right next to the Superdorm that we run on so that's nice. We then went to Kanyon Mall to meet Arican & Ege for dinner. We went early & walked around - it was insane! A half outdoor - half indoor mall with a skating rink inside & really cool architecture. It was fun to explore (: and dinner was delicious. Then Maddy & Kaya joined and all of us (minus Ege) took a cab to Cem's party by Koc. It was at his house and was again a lot of fun! Minus too much playstation with Iyit... and minus the huuuuge smelly guy who wanted to dance with me over & over & over! The gang all pitched in to save me multiple times & Livyo dubbed it "Saving Private Ryan" bahaha çakal! (clever!) Plus they had delicious raspberry cake - I think that's three birthday parties we've been to already & we're already planning Allie & Arican's joint 21st! Saim also taught me how to conjugate all turkish verbs - give me a verb, any verb & i can tell you the past present & future tense of that verb! (: dang Türkçe seviyorum!! (i love turkish!)

Today Allie & I went on a HUUUGE gezmek! We just decided to have a wander and see where we ended up... turns out we went really far - even a muddy hike under the freeway haha (: and found a cool part of the city that felt much more foreign and exciting. It was freezing though so we didn't even shop - we have nothing to show for the 5 hours we walked around. Oh, except Allie found the best simit ever! (seemeet - our fave bagel like bread with sesame seeds. mmmm) & i found the lamest ice cream ever! hahaha. Pasta with Erin Julia & Tim again plus some more Turkish tv tonight pretty much wraps up the week (: I'll try to put pictures up tomorrow.... it's 2:34am here & it's a school night! You see what I mean about time here? Where does it all go??

Enjoy the pics on facebook for now (: Miss you all!

Gule Gule!

Yamur Adam! (It's Raining Men)

hahaha. not really. mostly just rain! The past week has been a lot of fun though. It feels like we've been here forever! Sadly, bagaj yok (still no bags for me)...which reminds me, I need to buy some more Turkish underwear today! But also, I am still borrowing Allie's computer to get on the internet. So, while my pictures are on my computer (I really am photo-recording this trip!), they won't be online for you all yet. Soon, I promise!! I am calling British Airways / Air France today to see what we can find... On saturday we went out for a waffle breakfast (mmm) and then Allie Julia and I made arkadas (friends) with the fruit stand boys and bought some portakal (oranges) kivi (kiwis) & muz (bananas). Then we got cellphones from Turkcell and made friends with the store owners too haha. That night Tim Allie Julia & I we ate at Ufram Ocakbesi (mmmm) which just happens to be the best kebap place around & went to Taksim, to an "Aydish Bup" - a place our Superdorm security friends recommended. It was actually an Irish Pub with live music and it was really great. We're probably going back for Allie's birthday in march. The next morning, the Turkcell guys (or men I should say) took us (julia allie TIM - we were safe i swear - and me) out & paid for Sunday brunch (super traditional Turkish food! Balkaymak seveyorum! I love honey yogurt!) Whenever we mention to people that we've eaten balkaymak they are really impressed (: That night one of the exchange students hosted a "tea party" (chai) in her Superdorm room and almost all the Superdorm exchange kids were there! It was great to meet more 'foreigners' all from france, the netherlands, germany, etc! Then on monday a big group of us went to the Grand Bazaar in the Old City. WOW! It is absolutely huge. It wasn't tents, like I was picturing, it was actually a full blown huuuge building, like a maze, filled with shope after shop selling carpets, chandeliers, lights, jewelry, antiques, spices, shoes, purses, and even jeans - I bought a pair of "Armani" haha and they actually fit really well! So I'm kind of surviving this whole bagaj yok situation (: On tuesday we finally met Arican (ahreejan... c sounds like a j here) and his friend Ege (she is so cute!!) and they took us to the Dolmabahce Palace, where the last Sultan of Turkey lived and died in 1938. WOOW! It was unbelievably beautiful. One of the chandeliers in the main hall weighs 4.5 tons! And, mom, they love trompe l'oeil (: their paintings made all the celings look twice as high. From there we made it to orientation with the Student Xchange program. Our tour guide Silcuk was great. All the students bussed out to the water for a fancy dinner and then to the Tophane district for group nargileh (hookah). Our group just played Backgammon for a while (: Tavlah that is, it's Turkey's favorite pastime. Then we took Silcuk with us to Taksim to meet Arican and Ege. It was Arican's friend's birthday party at a Mexican restaurant (with incredible music!) and we danced forever! They even played Elvis and the Beach Boys haha (: Allie Julia & I all tried Turkish Raki - tastes like black licorice so Julia & I are fans... On wednesday we registered online for classes which was a nightmare, met Elif for lunch (she lived in the superdorm last year with our WashU friend Eric and she is sooo great and helpful and wants to take us to do everything!) then we painted our nails in Allie's room while we waited for Arican to call. We met him & his friend Emre in Bebek for a delishhh dinner and then back to Taksim for some HILARIOUS dancing. Seriously, Julia Erin & I OWNED that dance floor. Especially when It's Raining Men came on (: That was last night, & boy are we exhausted. Since I don't have running shoes, I'm waiting here and updating the blog & emails & fb while Julia Erin & Allie go on a run. Today we are going to campus to find our classrooms and buy some sweet Bogazici spirit wear. It's raining again & it's suppposed to rain tomorrow, so maybe we'll even rent a movie... And hopefully we'll go back to Ufram Ocakbesi for absolutely delicious kebaps!! More to come (:

OMG! Finally here!

Merhaba from Istanbul!! (finally) holy moly (: I knew I signed up for an adventure when I decided to study abroad in Istanbul, but this isn't quite what I had in mind! To make a long story short, Heathrow and snow are a terrible combination (even if it's only about two inches). My plane landed quite nicely at 6:45 am in Heathrow. I then proceeded to wait 4 hours ON the plane and another 6 hours in a long, slow-moving line. British Airways kindly set me up in a hotel, about an hour into the city and told me to take the Tube to Euston. Well (haha) I managed to get myself to Euston Square instead of Euston Station so I wandered around for a while in the snow (it was about 8pm at this point) until I asked a bus driver for directions and made it to my hotel no problem. A number of my friends from the 6 hour line were there too! Including two Turkish women who were booked on my flight (:
I woke up at 5:30 the next morning and took the Tube back to the airport, waited two hours to check in and was so close to the counter when my new flight was cancelled. I spent the rest of the day in line again and they booked my on an AirFrance flight through Charles De Gaulle. In line at the AirFrance check-in, I met Katie Numbers - an American girl who is also studying at Bogazici (my university!) She had a hostel and a ride from the airport already arranged and they even had room for me so we finally made it to Istanbul and stayed at the Bahaus hostel that night. Sadly, neither of us had luck with our luggage coming through and to this day, our bags have not been delivered! We had a lot of fun finding our way around Sultanamet though and eventually tramming/busing our way to the Superdorm.

It's pretty nice accommodation. I have three Turkish roommates: Irem, a master's student in civil engineering, Zeynep a freshman in chemical engineering, and Çiğdem a sophomore in mechanical engineering. They all seem to be really nice and fun so I can't wait to actually get to know them. The past few days have been spent getting to know the other Americans (mostly girls) and exploring our way around the city, trying to buy the essentials: a bed sheet, shampoo, underwear!, tee-shirts, and food!

Last night some of us went to Taksim, the party area, with Tugay - a Turkish guy who just came up to me and started asking if we needed help doing anything. Don't worry. Everyone here is genuinely hospitable, friendly, and willing to go out of their way to help! All of us always have our guard up, thinking these people are just being helpful because they want something - but they never do! He took us to a fun, popular bar where we each enjoyed our first Turkish beer (not bad, but not my favorite...Julia helped me finish it) and then to a bizarre dance club where no one was dancing, but us haha. Oh well, Julia and I probably had the best moves I've seen in a while and we used practically the whole floor! It was a lot of fun & a great way to get to know the girls (: we were all so goofy! Today we all got waffles together (so delicious) and Allie Julia and I made friends with the fruitstand boys who spoke no english. We sure are learning a lot of Turkish really fast! We might meet them later tonight to back to Taksim, this time we're bringing our American friend Tim along to make sure we're guzluk (safe!) I think we are all having a fabulous time and enjoying the beautiful weather! Time to go buy a TurkCell! Pictures and more posts to come...
